Shravan is considered one of the most sacred months for devotees of Lord Shiva. During this month, temples echo with the chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya”, one of the most revered mantras dedicated to Mahadev. But why does this simple five-syllable mantra hold such a special place in Shiva worship?
What Does Om Namah Shivaya Mean?
Om Namah Shivaya is traditionally understood as an offering of reverence and surrender to Lord Shiva. “Om” represents the sacred primordial sound, while “Namah Shivaya” means salutations to Shiva.
The mantra is also known as the Panchakshara Mantra, referring to its five sacred syllables: Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya.
